The government has committed £65 million in support to renters struggling due to the impact of the pandemic. This is on top of the £500 million the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities have already committed to the Household Support Fund.
The implementation of the fund will be the role of local councils, at the time of writing this article no councils have published their delivery method. The councils must focus the funds to ‘supporting low-income earners in rent arrears - helping to prevent homelessness and support families to get back on their feet’.
The Minister for Rough Sleeping and Housing Eddie Hughes MP expanded on the purpose of the fund:
“This new funding will support families that are struggling and help to get them back on their feet as we begin to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.”
A large stipulation by the government said the money is to go directly to landlords to cover rent arrears / prevent evictions, as well as to assist people to find a new home. This move is praised by many landlord associations, providing more security in a scheme from the government targeted at supporting Landlords just as much as tenants affected by the pandemic.
